Farmers’ markets offer area goodness
Take some of the region’s freshest produce and throw in an opportunity for area residents to enjoy a pleasant day with family and friends, and you have the perfect recipe for local farmers’ markets.
Held at many locations throughout the Tri-State Area, the markets offer a chance to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and to support the men and women who grow them. You’ll also find a variety of baked goods; jams, jellies and pickles; and crafts from local organizations, vendors and crafters.
Here’s a sampling of markets held across the region:
¯ The Steubenville Farmers’ Market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday at the former Grant School property at the corner of Fourth and South streets.
¯ The Farmers’ Gateway Market, coordinated by the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District, is open from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday in the parking lot at Eastern Gateway Community College,
¯ The Weirton Farmers’ Market is held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Monday in the lot in front of Crossroads Church on Penco Road.
¯ The Brooke County Farmers’ Market is held in two locations. On Saturdays, the market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the former Pillsbury plant in Wellsburg. On Wednesdays, the market is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot in front of Tractor Supply along state Route 2 in Follansbee.
¯ The Misty River Marina in Toronto is the location for a farmers’ and flea market held from noon to 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
We hope everyone in our area will take some time out of their hectic schedules to visit a farmers’ market, enjoy the nutritional benefits that come from eating fresh fruits and vegetables, relax a little with your friends and neighbors and show your support for local farmers.
