History made by Indian Creek team

Saturday’s final day of the 2017 Ohio Track and Field Championships was very special for Indian Creek High School.

Its girls 4×400 relay team won the Division II state championship, the first state title in any sport in the school’s history, an accomplishment we congratulate them for.

Madison Smith, Kelsey Lewis, Sloane Lewis and Aimayah Dudley made up the foursome who completed the four laps around the track inside Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in 3:55.84.

The state title capped a good weekend for the Redskins’ girls. The same relay team finished third in the 4×800 relay and Smith took third-place in 800-meter run.

Smith, who will continue her athletic and academic careers at the Air Force Academy, and Kelsey Lewis had been a part of the Indian Creek relay 4×400 team that finished seventh in 2016. That experience helped them this season, especially in the finals on Saturday when a late surge from Smith secured the win by 15-hundredths of a second.

“When races come down the stretch like that, it’s not about your ability. It’s about your heart,” she said shortly after the race. “Whatever’s in your heart is going to come through.”

Hard work, determination and the desire to succeed made all the difference for the relay team from Indian Creek Saturday afternoon in Columbus, and those same attributes can help all of us in what we do every day.
