Weirton United Way a success
In a time where it often is difficult to find support for a variety of programs, the Weirton United Way was able to exceed its goal for the 2016 campaign.
That announcement came last week during the campaign’s final official report luncheon, when United Way officials revealed $260,326.85 had been brought in through the various events, fundraisers and donations held during the last year.
Reaching the goal is always a time for celebration with the United Way. Hitting that mark by that final report is even more significant, as the Weirton United Way has had to extend its campaign over the last several years in order to bring in the needed donations.
Much of this is due to the hard work of Executive Director Linda Stear, Campaign Chair Tom McDonald, Campaign Vice Chair Pat Ford and all of the volunteers who worked throughout 2016 organizing the numerous campaign events and helping to get the word out about the United Way and its 13 member agencies.
In the end, those agencies are what it’s all about. Proceeds from this campaign will benefit the American Red Cross of Northwest West Virginia; Family Connections; Comfort House; Community Bread Basket; Dunbar Recreation Center; Healthways; Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall Retired & Senior Volunteer Program; Hancock County Sheltered Workshop; Hancock County 4-H Foundation; Weirton Medical Center; the Mary H. Weir Public Library; the Salvation Army, Weirton Corps, and the Weirton Christian Center. They are local groups which provide services directly to residents of Hancock and Brooke counties.
Whether it be literacy programs, utility assistance, food distributions, health services, emergency response, youth programs or programs for our local senior citizens, these agencies provide for residents of all ages in our area. Without the funds from the United Way, some of these programs might not be available, and that makes it even more important to stand beside the United Way and make certain these funds are brought in.
We thank everyone who has been involved in the 2016 campaign, whether volunteering your time, organizing an event or donating. You truly have made a difference in the lives of many.
