Cautious optimism about Mingo mill

After a decade of fits and starts and ownership changes, it could be that Mingo Junction’s steel mill is at least getting a partially bright future.

A company that was formed, apparently for the purchase and operation of portions of the mill, ACERO Junction, finally was publicly revealed as the reason for construction activity in the mill during the past several months.

After the promise of the startup of the ultra-modern electric arc furnace under Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., to the succession of owners, including Esmark, OAO Severstal, RG Steel and eventual closure and then ownership by mill redeveloper Frontier Group, the announcement last week that a new owner has arrived felt like an early Christmas to some in Mingo Junction.

The company is advertising for hires, to operate the mill, for sales and executives and has some former W-P execs, and other former steel company executives, involved.

In the weeks to come, hopefully, the community will learn more about the seemingly mysterious new owner, just what its plans are, just how many jobs will be provided and at what pay levels.

For now, it is enough to know that something positive is rising anew in what had been a steelmaking center for more than 100 years, with the hopes of a community that can re-grow and redefine itself around whatever the new owners of the mill bring back to life.
