Become informed before you vote

There are only six weeks left to the general election and time is limited to get to know the candidates and issues on the ballot.

The biggest decision facing voters across the country is the election of the president. A good way to become familiar with the candidates is to watch the upcoming debates.

There are also critical elections for U.S. senator and representative to congress.

In state races, there are contests for state senator and representative, supreme court justices, court of appeals and state board of education.

On the Ohio side, there are two contested races for Jefferson County commissioners,  as well as a race for sheriff. Two candidates are vying for county court judge.

There are also important levies and issues on the ballot.

Toronto is seeking the continuation of an income tax. Steubenville City Schools have a levy on the ballot for building improvements, which will replace an expiring bond issue. Jefferson County Joint Vocational School has a levy renewal for equipment and building maintenance. There are two new levies for fire districts in the Wintersville and Smithfield areas. The county developmental disabilities board and the prevention and recovery board have levy renewals to continue services to residents.

On the West Virginia side, there are contested races for state Senate and the 1st and 2nd districts of the House of Delegates, as well as for Hancock County commissioner. Voters also will have the opportunity to select the Hancock County clerk and sheriff.

Voters need to understand the candidates and their platforms, beliefs and agendas.

Making an educated choice is an important responsibility of living in a democracy.

Voter turnout probably will be high because of the importance of this election.

Get to know the candidates and the issues and levies before you cast your vote.
