Visit a chance for reflection

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of the Galveston-Houston archdiocese isn’t just a prelate passing through. He has shown a lasting awareness of the work of those who help the poor in Steubenville.

DiNardo will be one of a trio of speakers at an event honoring the Friendship Room on Logan Street, where director Molly McGovern and her husband, Bill, have remained in contact with the cardinal.

He has honored their work with the poor, and has family in the area, so he is no stranger to Steubenville.

A dinner for more than 400 is to be held Friday with various state and local officials in attendance, including Bishop Jeffrey Monforton of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville.

Those in attendance will not only have their chance to hear a cardinal but also to have their comfort zone shaken with a talk by a former prostitute.

DiNardo was baptized at St. Peter’s church and grew up in Pittsburgh.

The evening will be interdenominational, too, with leaders of various congregations gathering.

Jesus is said to have stated the poor will always be with us. And that’s a matter for all faiths.

Friday’s dinner is a visit of a church dignitary and a moment to reflect on caring for others in the community.
