Speaking out can help in crime fight

Crime is usually at the top of the list of concerns raised by any community.

Nobody wants to hear about the house down the street getting broken into or the wallet taken from a neighbor’s car that had been parked in the driveway. We don’t want to see drug deals on the corner or listen to shots fired in the middle of the night.

There comes a time when a community must stand up and say “enough.”

There comes a time when apathy must end. There comes a time when a neighborhood should stop living in fear.

Steubenville appears to be turning the corner on its fight against crime.

Residents are picking up the telephone and calling police with information. It may just be the suspicious car parked down the street or the suspected drug deal. Residents are calling the police about gunshots and then giving officers information on whom may be involved.

The drug task force is constantly getting calls about tips and information.

The city could triple its police force but still wouldn’t be effective without the help and cooperation of residents. Residents need to be the eyes and ears of the police department.

They need to call the police with information instead of turning their backs.

Crime can never be completely eliminated. But the city, with its police force and residents working together , can fight harder to rid the community of drug thugs and their guns.
