Ice Bowl a chance to have fun, help
Saturday’s weather forecast is calling for a high temperature in the mid-20s and a chance of snow showers – perfect weather for Ice Bowl 2013.
It’s exactly what organizers of the sixth-annual event, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Beatty Park, have been hoping for since planning began.
For the uninitiated, the local Ice Bowl is a disc golf tournament set for the course in Steubenville’s South End park. It’s a chance for residents from around the Tri-State Area to have some winter fun, rediscover the natural beauty of the park and help a couple of local charitable organizations.
If the previous Ice Bowls are any indication, you can expect spirited competition during the event.
That said, it’s important to remember that the event is designed to benefit local organizations. The entry fee is $10 and a bag of groceries – the money will go to the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center and the groceries will go to Urban Mission Ministries.
The local Ice Bowl is part of a global tournament held annually since 1987 to help raise money and food for local charities. Last year, according to the organization’s website, there were more than 230 Ice Bowls held in 2012. Those events drew more than 13,400 players, raised more than $297,000 and collected more than 79,000 pounds of food.
Ice Bowl 2013 offers a chance for area residents to help others while enjoying a day in the park. We hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity.
