Marlene Smith, 73, of Wintersville, OH, passed away March 1, 2018, at Lifeline Hospital in Wintersville, OH.
She was born March 5, 1944 in Mingo Junction, OH, the daughter of the late Willard George Atkins and Sadie Lee Bradford Atkins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Cortez Smith Jr.; her son, Christopher Lee Smith; a brother, Winfield Glenn; and a sister, Karen Claybrook.
Surviving are her four children, Leah Harvey of Steubenville, OH, Ernest (Regina) Smith III of New Concord, OH, Brett Smith and Beth Smith, both of Wintersville, OH; also Reshawn Jones whom she loved like a son; six grandchildren, Ryan (Amy) Hayden, Miles Hayden, Kylan, Morgan, Kayleigh and Teah; and four great-grandchildren.
Marlene is also survived by three sisters, Vicky Alfred of Steubenville, OH, Jean Trapp of Hopkinsville, KY, Trudy Marcus of Wooster, OH, and a very special cousin, Mattie Leathers of Weirton, WV.
Marlene was a retired member of Laborer’s Local 809, AEP and Industrial Scientific.
Marlene had a great love for family, opera, history, gardening and adventure. She always referred to herself as an armchair traveler because she loved to research countries, continents and islands.
She also had a love for languages and spoke French fluently. During the last night of her life, she listened to opera with her daughters.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was one the most intelligent women that one could ever know.
Services will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Vinson House of Mortuary, located at 711 N. 5th St., Steubenville, OH 43952. The viewing will be from 10 a.m. to noon with the service directly after. Eric McGrew will be officiating.
