Mae Byrom

BYROM, Mrs. Mae  Smith, 93, transitioned this life on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, in Huntersville , NC.   She was born to the late William and Mary  Smith on May 27, 1923 in Summerton, SC.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her late husband, Lonnie L. Byrom; three sisters and five brothers.

She received a degree in education from the College of Steubenville.  Later she earned her master’s degree in education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.  She was an elementary school teacher for 25 years in Hancock County Schools in W.Va., and Jefferson County  Schools in Ohio.

She was  very involved in her home community of Weirton, WV, and a faithful member of Quinn AME Church. She was active in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. since 1967; a member of the Ohio Association of Colored Womens Clubs Inc., the  La Femme Professonal Womens Club.

Moving to Charlotte NC in 2011, she joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She loved her new friends & church family who affectionately called her “Miss B.”

She is survived by one brother, Earl (Mignon) Smith of Freeport, Long Island, NY; two daughters, Londia (Lonnie) Langston, Wesley Chapel, NC; Regina A. Robinson of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Lerone (Kimberlie) Langston; Levar Langston; Thomas “TJ” (Krista) Tillman, Janae (Tadric) Robinson ; five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, until time of service at noon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte NC 28216.
