James Jones Sr.

James Howard “Jim” Jones Sr., 85, of Follansbee, WV, passed away at home on Thursday, August 25, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 19, 1931, in Follansbee, WV, a son of the late Ben Owen and Mattie (Ottwell) Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Avis Laree (Fankhouser) Jones, in 2002; four brothers, Wink, Tom, Newt, and Ben Jones Jr.

Jim graduated from Follansbee High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the Army during the Korean War. He retired from Koppers Industries, where he worked in the effluent plant. He attended Calvary Baptist Church. Jim’s love of airplanes led him to be a builder and flyer of model airplanes since the late 1950s. He was founder and president of the Spring Hills Silver Wings flying club.

After a courageous battle with lung cancer he leaves behind his “Better Half” Betty Flanagan at home. She was his “traveling, eating out, grass mowing buddy” and all around best friend. He also leaves behind three children who loved and adored him: James H. (Julie) Jones Jr. of Hammondsville, OH, Diane (Charlie) Corder of East Springfield, OH, and Kevin (Christina) Jones of Verona, IL; two grandchildren he loved and adored, Dr. Christopher Jones and companion Yoo-na Mackey of Houston, TX, and Shelby Jones of Verona, IL; two sisters, Lois Platt and Helen Waters, both of Wellsburg, WV; and his brother, Robert Jones of Spring Hill, FL; also two stepgrandchildren, Charlie Corder Jr. and Deb Corder’ four stepgreat-grandchildren, Kayla (Shane) Beck, Jessica Corder, Kimmy and Felicia McElroy; and one darling stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Dalaynee Corder.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 29, from 5-8 p.m. and again on Tuesday, August 30, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Mullenbach Funeral Home, 669 Main St., Follansbee, WV with Pastor Tim Colvin officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery in Colliers, WV.
