William E. (Bill) Shumard, 85, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away June 19, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa.
According to Bill’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. Entombment was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa.
Bill was born on October 25, 1928 in Steubenville, Ohio, on the family farm. He was the sixth child of Howard and Doris (Yates) Shumard.
Bill married Rosemarie Haines in March 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rosemarie preceded him in death in 2003.
Bill was a World War II veteran, entering the Army when he was 17 years old. He served in Berlin, Germany during the occupation.
He was an avid bowler and golfer who was especially proud of his three holes-in-one. He also loved piloting private aircraft, hiking with his favorite dogs and was always up for a game of cards.
In October 2010, Bill was on the second Honor Flight of Greater Dubuque, and he loved every minute of it. Bill lived in California for many years before his retirement, where he worked in steel manufacturing. He was also a fireman with the Bloomington, California, Volunteer Fire Department for several years.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Leslie (Steve) Neyens of Dubuque; his three sisters, Norma Bell of Smith Mountain Lake, VA, Ruth Nutting of Sarasota, FL; Ruby Bell of Wintersville, OH and many nieces and nephews.
Bill also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William E. “Wes” Shumard; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Shumard.
