Joseph J. Bruzzese
BRUZZESE, Joseph J. Sr., 94, of Steubenville, died on Monday, June 24, 2013, at Trinity Medical Center West.
Born October 2, 1918, in Steubenville, the son of the late Frank and Anna Gilberti Bruzzese, Joseph was the youngest of six children.
A 1937 graduate of Steubenville High School, Mr. Bruzzese attended Ohio Northern University, where his law school education was interrupted by World War II. On June 6, 1944, (D-Day), First Lieutenant Bruz-zese led a platoon of the First Engineers Special Brigade in the first wave of the Normandy Invasion onto Utah Beach.
Following the war, he returned home to marry the former Madeline R. Quattrone, with whom he raised three children.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Ohio Northern University (Petit College of Law) in 1946, Mr. Bruzzese was admitted to the Ohio State Bar and all federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. He practiced law in Jefferson County for 60 years and was a founder of the law firm currently known as Bruzzese & Calabria.
A past president of the Jefferson County Bar Association, Mr. Bruz-zese was chairman of the Board of Elections for 18 years and served as acting municipal court judge for two judges.
Active in community affairs, Mr. Bruzzese volunteered as Troop 1 Assistant Boy Scout Leader, Cub Pack 11, Weblo leader, and Little League coach.
Mr. Bruzzese was preceded in death by Madeline, his wife of 65 years, two brothers Dominic and James and three sisters Mary Prest, Teresa Gasper and Rose Ninerell.
He is survived by his children; Anna (Wm. Robertson, DDS), Frank (Ruth Anne) and Joseph, Jr. (Lisa), and his 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Mosti Funeral Home Sunset Chapel 4435 Sunset Blvd. Steubenville. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, military honors will be conducted by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Health System Foundation, 380 Summit Ave. Steubenville.
