Nelson Hocking

HOCKING, Nelson W. Jr., 88, of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013, at Trinity West.

He was born September 1, 1924, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, son of the late Nelson W. and Elizabeth Morgan Hocking.

Nelson was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Davis Hocking.

Nelson grew up in Martins Ferry, Ohio, graduating from Martins Ferry High School in 1942. He graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1949. During his college tenure, he enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers and served in the European Theatre of Operations from 1943 to 1946. Upon graduation, he began a distinguished career with the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation beginning in the engineer training program progressing through vice presidencies and a position on the board of directors.

Upon retirement Nelson served as an international management consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton directing an international consulting group on the construction of a greenfield basic steel plant and establishment of a city of 25,000 inhabitants for the Acominas Steel Corporation, Belo Horizonte, Brasil. He also served as a consultant in Lima, Peru and Paris, France. Upon his return to Steubenville, he served as president of Allied Electrical Contractors, retiring in 1982.

He is survived by daughters, Kimberly (Steve) Payne of Elberta, Alabama and Melanie Hocking of Steubenville.

He was a member of the Wintersville United Methodist Church, Georgia Institute of Technology Alumni Association and National Advisory Board, Tau Beta Pi, American Iron and Steel Institute, Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, Ohio City Lodge #486 F. & A. M. of Martins Ferry, Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville and Osiris Shrine of Wheeling.

He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank and Trust Company of Steubenville and First Steuben Bancorp, Board of Trustees of the Ohio Valley Hospital of Steubenville, Steubenville Chamber of Commerce, College of Steubenville Board of Advisors and Boy Scouts of America Fort Steuben Area Executive Advisory Council.

Private arrangements have been entrusted to the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, Steubenville. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV.
