RICHARDS, Samuel “Sam” Edwin, 76, of Chester, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep at home on Willow St., Sunday, January 6, 2013, in the early hours of the afternoon of a heart problem.
Sam, as he was known by many, was born in Steubenville, Ohio on June 23, 1936. He was the son of the late William and Audrey Richards. He was raised in the Steubenville area, where he lived for most of his younger life, always having a heart for his old home.
He was employed in his father’s grocery store in Steubenville during an earlier time, and then worked for many more years at Weirton Steel. After retiring from the Steel Mill, he worked as a delivery person for Flowerland for several years. He loved working there, and was sad when he had to retire.
After separating from his former wife, he attended a singles dance at Parents without Partners where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Shirley Ann [Yost] Wilson. They were married July 22, 1979 in the First United Methodist Church in Chester, WV, where they worshipped their heavenly father. He and his wife lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every moment they had with each other’s company.
Sam enjoyed many things, football being one of his most treasured interests. He was an avid Steelers fan and watched all the games with his wife, who he liked to bet with on who would win or lose. He also enjoyed collecting model cars, antique bottle openers, television memorabilia from his days of nostalgia, Steelers stuff, and historical memorabilia from Steubenville. Sam also enjoyed traveling; he and Shirley were always on the go. They went antiquing across the countryside, went to see many shows, and traveled the country to take in the sites every moment they could.
He was a veteran of the United States Army with three years of service to his country.
Including his widow Shirley Ann Richards, Sam is survived by his son, Greg Richards of Bloomingdale, Ohio; a step-son, Mr. David Clark (Janice) Wilson of Chester, WV; two step- daughters, Mrs. Jill Ann (Frank) [Wilson] Hanselman of Lexington, NC, and Sara Kay [Wilson] Gott of Atlanta, GA; three beautiful step-grandchildren, T. Nicole Hanselman of Greensboro, NC, Jackson E. Wilson, and Emily N. Wilson (both of Chester, WV); a brother, Mr. William (Cindy) Richards; a sister, Mrs. Delores (John) [Richards] Foley; several nieces and nephews; lots of friends; and his three dogs, Buster, Jiggs, and Jake.
Besides his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Ruth [Richards] Parry in 2003; a nephew, Richard Parry in 2001; and many friends and neighbors.
Rev. Phil Dukes will celebrate Sam’s life on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester where family and friends will gather on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
At the conclusion of Sam’s services on Thursday, the family invites friends to join them for a gathering of food and fellowship at the Chester First United Methodist Church.
