Legion post damaged by fire
WINTERSVILLE — An early morning fire heavily damaged the American Legion Post 557 hall at 1212 Two Ridge Road.
Wintersville Fire and Rescue Chief Robert Herrington said a neighbor heard the alarm at the hall sounding around 2:40 a.m. today. The police and fire departments arrived to find the deck at the rear of the building and the back of the building on fire, he said.
Firefighters had the fire knocked down in about 30 minutes, Herrington said.
He said the rear of the building suffered fire damage and there was heat damage throughout. He said the roof was saved, but the interior was gutted.
Herrington said he believes the fire started either on the deck or in the rear of the building. He said people like to sit on the deck and smoke and drink. There was a garbage can at the back door, he said. The post closed at 1 a.m.
A state fire marshal was to come to the hall today to try to determine a cause of the fire, Herrington said.
Herrington said having a full-time crew on station made a big difference in preventing even more damage to the building.
Belvedere and Richmond fire departments assisted, according to Herrington.
