Yellow Creek trustees get update on South Field construction work

WELLSVILLE — Excavation soon will take place at the site of the South Field Energy plant, but not a lot of other activity will be going on this winter, project officials say.

Representatives from Boston-based Advanced Power, the parent company of South Field Energy, provided an update on construction work for the 1,100-megawatt natural gas-powered electric plant, located off Hibbetts Mill Road, during Tuesday’s Yellow Creek Township trustees meeting.

Advanced Power Project Director John Coleman attended along with project engineer Nicole Makela and assistant project manager Joseph Gustat.

According to Coleman, contractors still are involved in earth works, which means that contractors there are cutting, filling and leveling the ground before they start excavating the actual area of the plant.

Coleman said utilities will be installed in the spring, but other major excavation work will not start until late February or March unless there is a break in winter-related weather.

“So where the actual power plant proper itself sits, that will be cut down for utility installation in the spring, but really that’s what’s going on this winter,” Coleman said. “There’s not a lot of work we can do. When it comes to actually compacting soil, it’s gotten past the point that we can do that. It’s gotten too cold, so we can’t get that good compaction.”

Coleman said officials have paved several roads that have been used by contractors, including Crawford Road, Hibbetts Mill Road and Osbourne Road as required by the Road-Use Maintenance Agreement between Advanced Power and the township, but added that more ditching will be handled.

Coleman said construction remains on schedule and they look to start laying down material in the spring.

“If it warms up for a good long week, we could do a little more, but it’s slowing down, it’s been pretty cold,” Coleman said. “Equipment’s not going anywhere.”
