Weirton plan moves ahead

WEIRTON — Weirton’s two utility boards on Thursday moved forward with plans for insurance coverage for their employees, following the lead of Weirton Council earlier this week.

During separate meetings for the Weirton Sanitary Board and Weirton Area Water Board, proposals were approved for health, vision, dental and life insurance policies.

“Every year, we’re back here in the same situation,” Utilities Director Butch Mastrantoni said.

Nathan Mazur of USI Insurance Services, was on hand to explain the plan. Mazur noted the city’s policy would remain with Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, with a $4,000 deductible and a $2,500 gap plan. Prescription plans have a co-pay.

The dental plan would have the city covering half the cost.

Life insurance policies also will be purchased, providing $50,000 for each employee.

Mazur explained meetings with the city’s general fund employees have been taking place this week, with positive reactions from those involved.

“It’s been well received,” Mazur said. “Everyone is excited about it.”

During the Sanitary Board meeting, Mayor Harold Miller, who chairs the board, asked about the life insurance policy, and whether it can be taken with the employee when they no longer work for city. Mazur said there is a “port” option when an employee leaves or retires. It also can be coverted to a whole insurance policy, he said.
