Judging just days away for city Christmas lighting contest

STEUBENVILLE — City residents who haven’t already put up their outdoor decorations, better get moving.

Steubenville’s annual Christmas lighting contest is just days away.

Mayor Jerry Barilla said the judges will be touring the city Wednesday and Thursday, picking out their favorite displays and jotting comments.

“There will be 11 awards,” he said. “Each ward will have a winner, so that’s six of them. But then, we’ll also have a grand prize winner, a mayor’s award winner, and awards for best theme, most outstanding lights and most original display.”

He said they’ll get together on Dec. 14 to make their decisions.

“It’s been a tradition,” Barilla said. “People enjoy lighting up their homes, and naturally, if there’s some type of competition, it makes it more exciting.”

Winners will be recognized at an upcoming council meeting, he said.
