Children’s lantern parade to take place
From staff reports
STEUBENVILLE — Youngsters interested in taking part in the first Children’s Lantern Parade are invited to meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Drosselmeyer’s Nutrcracker Shoppe, 155 N. Fourth St.
Participants will walk from the shop to the creche at Fort Steuben Park.
It’s all part of Laternelaufen, or “Walking with Lanterns.” Rooted in an old German custom for the time around St. Martin’s Day, kids walk along the streets holding colorful, often self-made lanterns, according to officials.
“It is not quite clear why the stories concerning St. Martin led to the custom of Laternelaufen,” organizer Therese Nelson said. “Maybe, just like Advent wreathes, Laternelaufen is a symbolic act of ‘bringing light into the world.”
Anyone who wants to be part of the inaugural parade should meet at Drosselmeyers. Those participating can make their own lantern or purchase one at Drosselmeyer’s. The shop also will have some lantern supplies for those interested in putting together their own lantern.
