Hancock school lunch distribution increases

NEW CUMBERLAND — Distribution of breakfasts and lunches for Hancock County Schools increased in October, according to school officials.

During Monday’s school board meeting, child nutrition coordinator Steve Govey reported an increase in students taking breakfasts and lunches daily last month.

Govey said distribution of breakfasts was up 34 percent over that month last year, while lunches have increased by 22 percent, with an overall average 27 percent increase in distribution and sales of meals.

Superintendent Tim Woodward said with the approval of the schools’ $7.1 million renewal levy during the Nov. 6 general election, the schools will be able to continue offering free breakfasts and lunches for all students, with $325,000 to be allotted toward that service.

Woodward also said a cook position may need to be added this year at Weir High School. He said lines at the high school’s cafeteria are too long and students aren’t able to sit for 20 minutes once receiving their lunches.

In personnel matters, the board:

¯ Approved Josh Stewart and Nikayla Edgell as girls basketball assistant coaches, Zack Brown as wrestling assistant coach and Erika Mello as a cheerleading assistant.

¯ Accepted the resignations of Weir High School boys assistant basketball coach John Leary and Allison Elementary cook Donna Herron. Leary cited medical reasons for his resignation, which went into effect Nov. 19, while Herron submitted her request to retire, with her retirement to go into effect Dec. 31.

¯ Approved an unpaid leave of absence request for central kitchen cook Mark Sabbato through Feb. 28

At the conclusion of the meeting, the board went into executive session to hold a student hearing.

The next regular meeting will be at 5 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Rockefeller Career Center.
