Davis will keep his seat for county commission

NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County Commissioner Jeff Davis has won a fourth six-year term after defeating Republican challenger Tommy Ogden following a canvass that took place Tuesday at the county election’s office.

In just as narrow a margin as the end of the night on Election Day, Davis defeated Ogden — 5,064-5054 — after an additional 82 provisional ballots were counted by officials, marking a change from last week’s results, which had seen the incumbent Democratic commissioner unseated by a even-more-narrow margin.

Last week, Ogden — a Chester native and co-owner of home improvement store Builders Wholesale — had defeated Davis by eight votes, 5,022-5,014, according to unofficial results posted at the time.

The results will be sent to the state attorney general’s office, and after a 48-hour period, a recount can be requested.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s canvass did not change the end result in the 1st District House of Delegate race, as incumbent Del. Pat McGeehan and former Del. Randy Swartzmiller won the two seats up for grabs in the four-way race.

Following the provisional votes, McGeehan, a Republican, finished first with 31.4 percent of the votes (5,527 votes total), while Swartzmiller, a Democrat, picked up 25.29 percent of the votes (4,451 votes).

Incumbent Republican Del. Mark Zatezalo, who has served for the past two years along with McGeehan, was unseated as he finished third with 23.06 percent (4,059 votes), and Democratic challenger Diana Magnone finished fourth at 20.18 percent (3,551 votes).
