Lowe’s Heroes step in and step up for recreation center

LOWES HEROES — The Steubenville Lowe’s store on Mall Drive provided volunteers and 15 gallons of paint at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center on Market Street Sunday. The gym was repainted in a deep blue color. Lowe’s has provided assistance to the center for two consecutive years under the Lowe’s Heroes program. STEUBENVILLE — When the LED lighting was installed in the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center gymnasium earlier this year, it became obvious that a new coat of paint was needed in the gym.

Enter the volunteers and assistance provided by the Steubenville Lowe’s store on Mall Drive.

Sunday, about seven volunteers joined Recreation Director Lori Fetherolf in applying 15 gallons of donated deep blue paint on the lower walls at the gym. A set of pads for the walls in a matching blue will be installed after the paint dries.

“It’s not just about the supplies. It’s the assistance of the volunteers,” Fetherolf said. “With such a small staff, there is no way I could do this by myself.”

She said Sunday marked the second straight year that Lowe’s of Steubenville has provided help to the center.

George Worrell, Lowe’s store manager, said the project is part of the Lowe’s Heroes program.

“Every store picks a community project. Last year, we painted the interior halls and offices, and this year we’re doing the gym,” Worrells said. “Lori is doing great things for this center. It provides a positive environment for people who might be off doing things they shouldn’t be doing. It’s a great asset for the community, and we’re glad to help.

Wes Hudson, human resources manager for Lowe’s, explained the center also offers grants for schools, and applications are available on the Lowe’s websites, in addition to community grants.

The home improvement retailer currently is supplying volunteers and supplies for flood relief in the Carolinas. A team from the stores in the region will be heading to North Carolina to help relieve Lowe’s store personnel there so they can go start their own personal flood recovery work.

The store also recently donated appliances to the Sycamore Youth and Community Center at Fourth and North streets, which will hold a grand opening Thursday.
