Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Race Director Robert “Scat” Scatterday, center, was presented the 2018 Hall of Fame award Thursday by Perry Nardo, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, left, and Assistant Race Director Joe Lovell.

WHEELING — In recognition of his service as race director of the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic for the past 12 years, Robert “Scat” Scatterday was presented Thursday the 2018 Hall of Fame award by Perry Nardo, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, and Assistant Race Director Joe Lovell.

Scatterday said he felt “extremely humbled” to receive such a distinguished award, noting the thousands of people who have worked with the race over the past 42 years to make it such a success. He said he believes everyone who has contributed to the race over the years should have their names on the plaque as well.

Scatterday said he has been involved with the race on different levels since its inception 42 years ago.

“I regard myself as just a kid from Warwood … and to be in a category with so many people that deserve the award is humbling,” Scatterday said. “I have seen thousands of people involved with the race and race committee, and those who have run the race … and those in my opinion are the people that are deserving of such recognition.

“I just got to be a leader as they did their job,” Scatterday added.

Scatterday, who is a retired Air Force major with 37 years of service, said he not only would like to credit the many people who served on the race committee over the years, but also his military career for providing him the discipline and framework for a successful life.

Scatterday had 4,000 flight hours, 136 combat missions in Vietnam and is the recipient of the Bronze Star, Air Medal and other medals during his military career.

“It’s been an honor to work with Scat, he’s been a tremendous asset to the race and to the greater Wheeling community,” Nardo said. “He has worked harder than anyone to keep the Ogden Half Marathon successful over the years, and is very deserving of this recognition.

“I hope the people in this community realize the commitment he’s made over the years to work for the betterment of the city,” he said. “This award is but a small thanks for all of his efforts.”
