Two arrested in

home invasion case

FOLLANSBEE — The Brooke County Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in the investigation of an alleged home invasion Sunday on Randall Avenue in Hooverson Heights.

Joshua A. Birrell, 35, of Cyrpess, Calif., and Deanna A. Edwards, 27, of Swanton, Ohio, each are charged with wanton endangerment with a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle and bringing the stolen vehicle into the state. Edwards also was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant for an alleged probation violation in New Jersey.

Brooke County Sheriff Larry Palmer confirmed the county’s special response team had been dispatched to the home early Sunday in response to reports of the man and woman forcing someone from the home.

Palmer said no one was harmed, but the incident remains under investigation.

Cases against Birrell and Edwards are pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.

WEIRTON — A Colliers man faces several charges after striking another vehicle and fleeing from a city officer Sunday afternoon.

The Brooke County Sheriff’s Department arrested Curtis B. Smith, 28, of 49 Kelsey Lane on charges of driving while his license was revoked, leaving the scene of an accident with damages, failing to report it and possession of a controlled substance.

The charges were filed by City Police, who said Smith was found passed out behind his steering wheel at the intersection of state Route 2 and Freedom Way.

A city officer reported Smith’s speech was slurred, he moved slowly and was found in possession of a bottle of liquor and baggie of marijuana.

The officer said when he prepared to arrest him, Smith drove away, continuing at a high speed eastbound on U.S. Route 22.

According to police reports, Smith struck another vehicle before heading toward Colliers, where the officer ended the pursuit.

According to court records, Smith was arrested by a sheriff’s deputy at the address found on the vehicle’s registration.

His case is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.

Banners to honor

veterans in Follansbee

FOLLANSBEE — The city will display along Main Street up to 60 banners honoring local residents who served in the military.

Families of veterans can sponsor a banner for $60 and will receive it after it has flown for a period of time. Those interested in honoring a loved one can call (304) 527-1330 for information.

The banners will include a photo and name of the veteran, his or her military branch and years served. Family members should submit DD214 discharge papers and a photo of the veteran, which can’t be returned.

Man pleads

in drug case

STEUBENVILLE — Anton D. Richardson, 26, of 619 Western Ave., Mingo Junction, pleaded guilty on Wednesday before Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Michelle Miller to three counts of drug trafficking.

Richardson is charged with selling methamphetamine and heroin in July and August.

The county drug task force raided the home earlier this month and found a gun and cocaine inside.

There is a joint recommendation from the prosecutor’s office and Richardson’s defense attorney for Richardson to be placed on probation.
