Fire destroys vacant house

STEUBENVILLE — The City Fire Department reported a fire destroyed a vacant house at 1016 McKinley Ave. early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters discovered the house was engulfed in flames when they arrived around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fire department said efforts were made to minimize damage to two adjacent houses.

Most firefighters remained on scene for more than three hours but a crew stayed there until 7 a.m. on Tuesday to watch for hot spots, the fire department reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Summer crisis program available

STEUBENVILLE — The summer crisis cooling assistance program is available through Aug. 31 through the Jefferson County Community Action Council. The program offers assistance for electric bills, air conditioners or fans for those who are at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

Low-income households with members 60 years old or older or households that can provide physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed may receive assistance of up to $300 as customers of a regulated electric company or $500 for customers of unregulated electric companies.

To set an appointment, call (844) 493-1195. A list of required documentation for the client to provide will be sent.

The CAC administrative office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 114 N. Fourth St. Home visits are available for clients unable to travel.

First ‘Bark n’ Brew’ slated

BLOOMINGDALE — The first “Bark n’ Brew” fundrasier is planned from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dungeon Hollow Brewing Co., 572 county Road 22A.

Three local businesses are working to hold a fundraiser for the St. Gertrude Cat Initiative – a nonprofit organization that works out of Richmond to spay and neuter feral cats.

Hosting the event is Countryside Kennels, a local pet boarding facility in Bloomingdale, and the Tipsy Pig food truck.

The event is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring their leashed furry friends.

The Tipsy Pig food truck will be on site with a special dog-friendly menu, with proceeds benefiting the St. Gertrude Cat Initiative.

Other events will include the Countryside Kennels dog pool, free dog bandanas and pet themed drawing prizes.

Dungeon Hollow also will be open.

Wintersville finance meeting set

WINTERSVILLE — Village Council’s finance committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday prior to the regular council meeting at 7 p.m.

The meetings will be held in council chambers, 200 Grove St.

Island Creek sets special meeting

STEUBENVILLE — Island Creek Township trustees will hold a special meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday to finalize the natural gas aggregate program.

The meeting will be held at the township garage, state Route 213.

Park named for Jesse Owens

COLUMBUS — Ohio’s governor has dedicated a new state park and wildlife area named for Olympic great Jesse Owens.

Two of Owens’ daughters accompanied Gov. John Kasich during Tuesday’s dedication ceremony in Columbus at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Owens was a world record-setting sprinter at Ohio State University and won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
