Planners look to move forward

STEUBENVILLE –The Jefferson County Regional Planning Commission hopes to have a new director in place by the end of June.

Martin Sohovich resigned May 16 as director after it was learned of the loss of a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to help fund a new Brilliant water treatment plant.

The planning commission met on Wednesday to discuss moving forward.

Scott Fabian, planning commission vice president, said Betty Lou Tarr will serve as interim director. She had more than 20 years of experience at the planning commission before she took a job as an assistant clerk in the county commissioners’ office. Tarr will split her time between the jobs, he said. Fabian said her experience is needed because a deadline for the planning commission’s application for the main CDBG grant is due on June 15. The county commissioners will hold the second public hearing on the grant on May 31.

The annual CDBG grant, totaling $226,000, funds several projects throughout the county.

“We are up against a deadline, but we feel we can make it with (Tarr) doing the work,” Fabian said.

The planning commission will advertise for a new director, taking applications until June 15, Fabian said. The executive committee will review the applications and interview finalists. Fabian said a recommendation will then be made to the full commission.
