Hills Elementary raises $5K for Relay For Life

FACE PAINTER — Hills Elementary fourth-grader and student senate member Tessa Irwin painted a miniature Spiderman on the face of kindergartener Piper Bell during the school’s annual mini Relay For Life held May 11. The fundraising wrapped up the following week, and Hills raised nearly $5,200 for the American Cancer Society, exceeding last year’s campaign total of about $3,200.

MINGO JUNCTION — Pupils at Hills Elementary School exceeded last year’s campaign total and raised nearly $5,200 for the American Cancer Society.

The school generated funds throughout the past few weeks and culminated with a Mini-Relay For Life held on May 11, which included laps around the John Muth Baseball Complex across from the campus and activities from face painting to inflatable rides.

“We raised $5,182,” said adviser Ashley Turnbull. “Last year we raised around $3,200. This was my first year being in charge of this activity. The student senate loved helping out with this event. Each member had his or her own station to work and we sold popsicles, pinwheels, T-shirts and had penny wars prior to the relay event.”

The mini-relay also included games, temporary tattoos and nail painting and pupils completed laps to bring awareness to the need for a cancer cure, as well as to honor those who have battled and overcome or succumbed to the disease. Turnbull said the success of the event was due to the support of the school and community.

“The relay is a tremendous amount of work and I couldn’t do it without all the support from our staff at Hills Elementary,” she added. “Between businesses, parents and teachers, we had almost everything donated for this day. I am so pleased with the amount that our school raised for such a great cause.”
