Outreach to look at drug issues

STEUBENVILLE — The Family Recovery Center’s education department, funded in part by the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery Board, is facilitating a four-day community outreach effort to address the drug issues in the area.

With cooperation from Brentwood Church; Buckeye, Edison and Steubenville high schools; the county drug court; and the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery board, Michael Deleon is scheduled to tour the county and will be presenting at various locations beginning Sunday.

The Steered Straight “invasion” will begin Sunday at Brentwood Church in Wintersville and will end with a presentation for the Jefferson County Drug Court on March 14. Monday and March 13 will be devoted to school assemblies at Buckeye, Edison and Steubenville high schools. A community at-large presentation is set for the evening of March 13 at the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery board office.

Deleon is scheduled to arrive from the Steered Straight’s New Jersey office on Sunday. He is the founder of Steered Straight Inc., a nonprofit organization formed in 2000 and designed to carry the message about the dangers of drugs, gang involvement and associated criminal activity.

Family Recovery Center officials said, in light of the opioid epidemic and the reports of drug trafficking in the area, the program is an effective and efficient way to reach students and the community.

Community leaders, parents, mental health and substance abuse workers, law enforcement, elected officials and the community at large are invited to attend a “solution based” presentation at 6 p.m. March 13 at the prevention and recovery board offices, 524 Madison Ave.

Family Recovery is asking people interested in attending to contact Joe Rawson at (740) 283-4946 or jrawson@familyrecovery.org
