Knife in trash can could lead to charges
TORONTO — Charges are pending against a St. Clairsville man after Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies found a knife under a trash bag in a trash can at Toronto county court Tuesday.
David Howard, 28, of St. Clairsville is being held in the Jefferson County jail after the knife was found.
Deputies were escorting Steven A. Johnson, 27, of Jewett to court for an appearance on charges stemming from a Jan. 7 a chase into Pennsylvania after an armed robbery at the Special Way store, 1592 state Route 213.
Deputies reported Johnson asked to use a restroom before going into court. Howard was seen leaving the restroom before a deputy searched the restroom before allowing Johnson in.
An 8-inch folding knife was found in a trash can under the trash bag.
Howard, who deputies said is Johnson’s brother, said he had placed the knife in the trash can because he knew he wouldn’t be allowed to have it in court. Reports indicate he said he didn’t want to walk back outside to put the knife in his truck.
Johnson is facing charges of aggravated robbery, failure to comply with the order of a police officer, fleeing and eluding, assault and driving with a suspended license, as well as prior failure to appear warrants out of Harrison County and Steubenville Municipal Court.
