Lee Avenue Bridge could be reopened

WEIRTON — There may still be a future for the Lee Avenue Bridge.

The issue was raised during Monday’s Weirton Council meeting, where officials explained an evaluation is being performed on the long-closed span to see if there is any potential to have it reopened.

City officials explained, during the meeting, they have been in touch with groups on the state and federal governmental levels about the possible project.

“They have federal money available,” City Manager Travis Blosser noted, explaining the funding would require a 20 percent match, which the city already has set aside.

The city also has received word from state officials the project would be expedited if it is able to move forward.

“We’ve had a commitment from the governor’s office,” Blosser said.

The Lee Avenue Bridge, which carries traffic over an industrial rail line located between East Street and Weir Avenue, has been closed for several years after being stricken on numerous occasions.

Despite various attempts to repair the span, it was deemed unsafe for traffic.

Mayor Harold Miller has stated he believes the bridge being closed creates a safety issue, cutting down on potential routes for emergency responders, and has been working on finding ways to have it either reopened as is, or rebuilt.
