Franciscan senior attends conference at West Point Academy

STEUBENVILLE –Kyle Binkiewicz, an Edison High School graduate from Amsterdam, was selected to attend the Student Conference on U.S. Affairs at West Point Academy. Binkiewicz, a senior history and German major at Franciscan University of Steubenville, sat in on a roundtable for terrorism that was led by Arie Perliger, an Israeli who served in the Israeli security force, and Army Col. Mark Mitchel, who served in Iraq.

In Binkiewicz’s group, he analyzed local security forces fighting terrorism and what the United States can do to help Nigerian local forces combat the terrorist group Bhoko Hiram.

Binkiewicz said this rare opportunity to discuss issues with leading military experts taught him how to better research and argue his points and collaborate in a group.

“It showed me that I need to be a well rounded teacher with input from multiple sides of any subject,” he said.

“There are no clear cut answers to history and military issues,” he added.

Approximately 200 college students from across the United States attended the November conference.

Binkiewicz was chosen to represent Franciscan University by Robert Doyle, history professor, and Daniel Kempton, chief academic officer.
