Legion Post 10 to no longer show NFL games

WEIRTON — One more local veterans organization has joined the ranks of those no longer showing professional football games on their televisions as a result of the continuing practice by some players of kneeling during the national anthem.

According to Harold Elliott, the sergeant-at-arms of American Legion Post 10 in Weirton, effective immediately, the post will no longer allow National Football League games to be shown in the hall located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave.

“We’re not going to telecast any more NFL games,” Elliott said.

Elliott explained Post 10 members made the decision Thursday night, and wanted to let the public know of the outcome.

“We had a vote,” he said. “We’re not going to show them on our TVs.”

In early October, members of American Legion Post 121 in Chester announced they, too, would no longer allow NFL games to be shown in their hall.

Throughout the current NFL season, numerous players and other team personnel have knelt or sat during the playing of the national anthem prior to the start of their games.

Some players have said the practice is a form of protest against racism and other social issues.

NFL officials have ruled players would be able to kneel without facing any penalty.
