George Custer birthday observance slated

NEW RUMLEY — This year’s Custer Memorial Association’s birthday observance for Gen. George Custer is set for Dec. 9 and will have the theme of “Custer at Gettysburg.”

Dr. Mandal Haas of Carrollton will present the program.

The evening will begin with a family-style dinner served at 5:30 p.m. at the New Rumley United Methodist Church. Dinner music will be performed by Herman Neimayer. Following dinner and birthday wishes to Gen. Custer, portrayed by Rick Williams, certificates will be awarded to the group’s gold sponsors. Drawings will be held for donated gifts from local merchants.

The cost is $15 per person, and reservations may be made by Dec. 2 by calling Dave Rose at (740) 945-3744 or sending a response to Custer Memorial Association, P.O. Box. 111, Jewett, OH 43986. Tickets also are available at Neimayer’s Pharmacy in Scio and the Harrison County Tourism Office in Cadiz.

The cavalry engagement at Gettysburg has often been overlooked, according to event organizers, and in modern times few tourists visit the site called East Cavalry Field, though it is a part of the official battlefield administered by the National Park Service.

Haas has been a central figure of the Association’s June observance with the firing of his Civil War cannon. For this birthday celebration, Haas is to explain the importance of the engagement on the East Cavalry Field and the role of Gen. Custer.

Besides being a Civil War artilleryman re-enactor, Hass is board certified in family practice. He received his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine and completed his residency with Aultman Family Practice.

Custer was born on Dec. 5, 1839, in New Rumley.

The general’s birthplace sign is located at the intersection of state Routes 151 and 646 in Scio, and the Custer monument was built in the 1930s.
