Weirton park improvements discussed

WEIRTON — The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation continues to discuss plans for improvements to Starvaggi Memorial Park, moving forward with a proposed paving of the park’s existing tennis and basketball courts.

During last week’s board meeting, Parks Director Terry Weigel reminded the board the J.C. Williams Foundation had awarded $50,000 to assist with the costs of the paving project, which would include other upgrades for the court area.

“To do that, we’re requiring the fencing be taken down,” Weigel said, noting new lighting also is being planned.

Weigel asked for approval on the paving contract, as the work is planned to take place within the same paving cycle as the street paving recently approved by Weirton Council in order to cut down on time and cost.

Board members agreed the paving should move forward, along with sealing and striping, and the purchase and installation of new fencing and lighting. The entire project has been estimated at just under $100,000.

“To do just the paving is like building half a house,” Board Chair Edwin Bowman said.

Weigel also noted the importance of beginning the project soon so there is little or no conflicts with the high school tennis season in the spring. Both Weir High and Weirton Madonna use the tennis courts.

In related business, Bowman said he would begin seeking sponsorships to assist with the installation of new benches at Starvaggi Park. Board members previously noted several of the existing benches are in need of replacement.
