JB Green Team gets bin grant
STEUBENVILLE — The JB Green Team has been awarded a Dr Pepper Snapple Group/Keep America Beautiful Park Recycling Bin grant.
According to JB Green Team Jefferson County Education Coordinator E. Louise Holliday, the recycling grant program encourages “on-the-go” recycling of beverage bottles and cans.
“Too often visitors to parks have no option for recycling their beverage bottles or cans and must place the items in the trash,” Holliday said.
The JB Green Team received 25 recycling bins that were placed in Steubenville Belleview Park Pool, Toronto Memorial Pool, Stratton Park Pool, Mingo Junction Aracoma Park and Pool and the St. Clairsville Memorial Park and Allen Pool areas.
A national survey by Keep America Beautiful found a significant lack in “away-from-home” recycling opportunities. According to the survey, 90 percent of those surveyed said it was not difficult to recycle at home, but 55 percent found it challenging to recycle in public spaces.
The survey reported only about 12 percent of public locations provided recycling options to visitors.
The Dr Pepper Snapple Group/Keep America Beautiful Park Recycling Bin Grant program was developed to address the lack of recycling convenience in public places.
According to a company press release, the “Dr Pepper Snapple Group/Keep America Beautiful Park Recycling Bin Grant program is funding 914 new recycling bins in public parks across the country in 2017, making recycling more accessible for Americans enjoying the outdoors.”
“As Americans head to their favorite public park, beach or playground, many will find new recycling bins helping keep those treasured spaces clean thanks in part to a significant grant by Dr Pepper Snapple Group in partnership with national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful. Now in its fifth year, the Park Recycling Bin Grant Program from Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Keep America Beautiful has provided more than 4,300 recycling bins to local governments and community organizations across 41 states,” the company statement reads.
“The JB Green Team is pleased that with the assistance of this grant, we can help five local parks to now provide beverage bottle and can recycling options to visitors,” commented JB Green Team Executive Director Anita Petrella.
