Toronto council hears update on several city projects

TORONTO – Various projects, including road work, are ongoing throughout the Gem City, according to City Council members.

Councilman at large Ron Holmes at Monday’s meeting reported the city is continuing to patch water line holes with concrete. The holes then will be brought up to grade with hot mix.

In addition, demolition has been completed on the bottom portion of Federal Street and is continuing along Main Street, it was noted. Officials are prepping for the citywide cleanup, which will entail collecting old tires and electronics in addition to miscellaneous household items. The dates for the cleanup are May 15-19.

Officials noted a list of streets in need of repair is being submitted by council members to Mayor John Parker.

In other matters, a resolution was passed commending the Toronto High School basketball team and coaching staff on their winning season and participation in the playoffs during the 2016-17 season. Parker, who was not present at the meeting, will present the resolution to the team during the next council meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. April 10 at the City Building.

In other business, the board:

¯ Heard from Councilman at large G.R. Dickinson, who thanked the city and those who helped to make the recent Campbell-Dickinson Run-Walk-Ride a success. He noted he and his wife, Jenny, of which the walk is partially named after, were able to raise more than $7,000 for Trinity Health System’s Tony Teramana Cancer Center Emergency Assistance Relief Fund. While a total still is to be determined, he stated it would not have been possible without the hard work of everyone.

¯ Passed a resolution designating April as Fair Housing Month in the city.

¯ Approved an ordinance establishing a table of organization of positions within the city, retroactive to June 27, 2016, and repealing a previous ordinance. This includes summer work, it was noted.

¯ Approved the revised 2017 budget for the city.

¯ Approved an ordinance authorizing the auditor to establish appropriations and approve necessary transfers for current expenses and other expenditures of the city during the fiscal year ending Dec. 31.

¯ OK’d a resolution authorizing the auditor to transfer $17,779 from the account established to pay health insurance claims under the city’s previous health insurance plan into the general fund because all anticipated claims under the previous health insurance plan have been paid.

¯ Heard from 2nd Ward Councilman Dorothy Blaner who asked council to review the opinion provided through the Jefferson County Planning Commission regarding junk and/or abandoned vehicles on public or private property.
