WEIRTON — Weirton’s second ward officially has a new representative to city council.

On Tuesday, Matthew Provenzano was sworn in as the new Ward 2 councilman, replacing Chuck Wright, who stepped down in December after being elected as Hancock County circuit court clerk.

Surrounded by family and several city officials, Provenzano was given the oath of office by 1st Judicial Circuit Court Judge Jason Cuomo in the council chambers of the Weirton City Building.

Provenzano explained he has always wanted to find a way to get involved in the community, and when the opportunity became available, he felt being on council would be the right fit because it allows him the chance to make a difference on a local level.

“I want Weirton to be a place where residents choose to stay and new people come to live,” he said.

He said he plans to work toward getting to know his ward and its residents better, while also promoting area businesses, the education system and other positive aspects of the city.

“I want them to know they’re in good hands,” Provenzano said.

Provenzano said one of the projects he hopes to be able to tackle while in office is the repair and reopening of the Lee Avenue Bridge.

“That’s something I think is within reach,” he said. “We need good infrastructure. We need roads.”

A native of Steubenville, Provenzano is a graduate of Steubenville Catholic Central High School and West Virginia University. He has lived in Weirton since 2007, and is the owner of Felici Insurance, which has offices in Weirton and Follansbee.

Mayor Harold Miller welcomed Provenzano to council, saying he looks forward to working with him.

“We’re really excited about Matt Provenzano joining city council,” Miller said, noting Provenzano’s education and business background and his civic-mindedness. “Matt is going to do good things for the community.”

Provenzano was appointed by the remaining members of Weirton Council during a special meeting Jan. 20. His term will last until June 30, 2019.
