Deadline to file candidacy Jan. 28 in New Cumberland

NEW CUMBERLAND — Jan. 28 is the final day for city residents to file their intentions to run for mayor or council on the May ballot.

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Linda McNeil reported the city is in the midst of accepting petitions for those who wish to run for the seats in the May 9 election. Starting Jan. 9, residents and incumbent council members had a 10-day period in which they could file their petitions for the seats, four of which are open.

Five of the terms will expire June 30, which includes McNeil, Ward 2 council members Maureen Vulgamore, Shawn Marks and Judith Bartley, and Ward 1 Councilman Brian Webster.

Three of the council seats, along with the mayor’s spot, will each go for four-year terms, while the fourth seat will serve as a two-year term.

McNeil, elected May 2013, opted to serve one-term and will not seek re-election.

Bartley and Webster will finish their four-year terms, while both Vulgamore and Marks served two-year terms.

It remains unclear at this time if the incumbents will run for re-election. The new term begins July 1.

Council’s next regular meeting is 5 p.m. Feb. 6.
