Toronto approves truancy officer for schools

TORONTO — The city school district board approved the hiring of a court liaison officer for the district during a recent board meeting.

The board approved a payment of $1,475 to the Jefferson County Educational Service Center to hire A.J. Hunt as district liaison officer, according to Fred Burns, superintendent.

“(Hunt) will be here two days a week. We’re sharing him with Edison (Local School District).”

Hunt’s job will be to work with pupils, students and parents regarding chronic truancy, Burns said.

“That’s a reduced (fee) from last year,” Burns continued, adding the Jefferson County Juvenile Court was able to obtain a grant to offset the cost. “The grant was obtained by the court, and it’s being administered by the ESC. Most districts in Jefferson County are involved in this.”

In other matters:

¯ Burns said the district will be involved in Destination Imagination this year for elementary and high school students. Board members budgeted $1,000 for the program, and educator Melissa Brown will be program leader.

¯ The board approved $19,640,236 for its appropriations for this school year.

¯ The board endorsed upcoming levies for the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School; Steubenville City Schools; and the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery Board. The board also endorsed Toronto’s .05 wage tax levy renewal. All proposals are on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The next board meeting will be at 5 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Karaffa Elementary School library.
