Hancock breast cancer walk set for Oct. 8

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Health Department will hold its annual walk for breast cancer awareness on Oct. 8.

The Walk for Women … Take a Step Against Breast Cancer event will begin at 10 a.m. outside the Hancock County Health Department, 100 N. Court St.

The event is intended to raise awareness of the need for breast cancer screening, to honor breast cancer survivors and to remember those who have died from the disease, according to organizers.

“One in eight women in West Virginia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Nearly every West Virginia family is affected by the disease,” said nursing supervisor Michelle Truax. “This program provides us with the opportunity to offer free or low-cost mammograms and Pap tests to our patients here in Hancock County who qualify.”

The Walk for Women is free and open to the public, and T-shirts will be available for a $10 donation. Proceeds will benefit the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program and its diagnostic and treatment fund.

The diagnostic and treatment fund, established by the state Legislature in 1996, helps pay for further diagnostic and treatment services for women who otherwise would not be able to afford them.

At the time, the Legislature asked that partners raise money to supplement the fund, according to officials.

“We are honored to be hosting the walk,” said health department Administrator Jackie Huff. “We invite all residents to come and walk with us. Every dollar we raise at the walk stays in West Virginia and will be used by women in Hancock County.”

Registration for the walk starts at 9 a.m. The walk will begin with a balloon launch at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be served at the health department afterward.
