Shots fired during weekend
STEUBENVILLE — A 16-year-old male suffered a head injury after shots were fired around 7 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue, City Police reported.
It was the second incident of shots fired within a block in the Pleasant Heights neighborhood over the weekend.
Police reported a Mercedes turned onto the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue, followed by a Malibu. Two people on the sidewalk pulled out handguns and began shooting, police reported.
The 16-year-old male passenger in the Mercedes was grazed by a bullet, said police Chief William McCafferty. The male was taken by ambulance to a Pittsburgh hospital for observation.
“He was lucky,” McCafferty said.
The Malibu was found a short distance away unoccupied, and a handgun was found on the driver’s side floor, police reported. The car was towed by police as evidence.
McCafferty said detectives are trying to determine if occupants in the Malibu or the people on the street fired first. Several 9 mm shell casings were found at the scene. McCafferty said officers are working to determine if the people in the Mercedes were involved or just got caught in the shots being fired.
Police also are investigating shots being fired around 4:55 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Plum Street and Lawson Avenue.
Police received a call about four to five shots being fired. Five shell casings were found at the intersection of Plum Street and Lawson Avenue, according to an officer.
Police reported people inside a gray SUV were seen sticking guns out the vehicle window and firing shots. Another vehicle was seen leaving the scene after the shots were fired, police reported. A person was reported to have fired a shot back at the SUV, according to police.
Police are unsure if there is a connection between the two gunfire incidents.
