Man injured

in motorcycle accident

STEUBENVILLE — A city man was seriously injured Wednesday evening when the motorcycle he was riding struck another vehicle, ejecting the rider onto the pavement, according to City Police reports.

Seth Blackwell, 37, no address provided, reportedly turned northbound onto Rosswell Avenue at a high rate of speed when he struck another vehicle traveling southbound about 6 p.m. Wednesday. According to witnesses at the scene, Blackwell was traveling the wrong way down the one-way street and was ejected from the motorcycle onto the pavement. He was treated at the scene and flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition as of this morning was unknown.

According to the report, Blackwell was cited for traveling the wrong way down a one-way street, driving under a suspended license, no motorcycle endorsement and improper display of plates.

New Cumberland man

charged with sex abuse

WELLSBURG — A New Cumberland man has been charged by the Brooke County Sheriff’s Department with the sexual abuse of a child in his care.

Barry L. Mellott, 33, of New Cumberland, has been charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count each of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian and using obscene matter to seduce a minor.

The charges stem from allegations Mellott engaged in sexual contact with the minor that didn’t include intercourse and that he watched a sexually explicit movie with the child.

Wellsburg Police assisted the sheriff’s department in the investigation.

Mellott’s case is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court, where it may be bound over to circuit court because it involves felony charges.

Indian Creek schools

plan orientation

WINTERSVILLE — Indian Creek Schools are planning orientation sessions.

Indian Creek High School will host an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Friday. Students may view the building and meet their teachers for the coming school year. New students and freshmen can participate from 11 a.m. to noon.

Indian Creek Middle School in Mingo Junction invites students and their families to its open house from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Fifth-grade orientation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, and attendants may purchase yearbooks and athletic passes in the library. The Media Club will conduct registration for the Remind App and provide information about school and home communication.

Both elementary schools have slated an open house for Monday. Hills Elementary School will hold an ice cream social from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and incoming students can meet their teachers and become familiar with their surroundings. Wintersville Elementary will hold its event from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at which time children and their parents may tour the building and meet the faculty.

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Courthouse.

WINTERSVILLE — Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 1 to discuss gas aggregation.

The meeting will be held prior to the 7 p.m. regular council meeting in the village office at 200 Grove St.

Harrison has new diabetic program

CADIZ — Ohio State University Extension/Harrison County has a new and free program called “Dining with Diabetes: Beyond the Kitchen,” a self-paced online course to help participants learn, share and chat with health professionals. To register, visit go.osu.edu/DWD–BTK and click “buy now.” The course will be added to cart for checkout at no cost, according to Joseph Maiorano, family and consumer sciences educator.

After completing the transaction, the participant will be required to create an account with campus.extension.org to take advantage of the materials provided.

Lessons include how important blood sugar and carbohydrates are for managing diabetes; how fats and sodium affect a healthy diet; the role vitamins, minerals and fiber play in a healthy diet; and how to make healthy food choices when eating out and shopping.
