Edison preschool goes all day long

HAMMONDSVILLE — Four-year-olds attending the Edison Local School District Early Childhood Program will stay all day following changes instituted this year.

District Administrative Assistant/Early Childhood Director Fatima Smuck said the program, which starts on Aug. 29 at Stanton Elementary at Hammondsville and John Gregg Elementary in Bergholz, will instruct 4-year-olds Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., with 3-year-olds holding half-day classes on those days.

Early registration was conducted this spring, but forms still can be completed at the school of the pupil’s district residence.

Smuck said classrooms and teachers have added to accommodate the new format and parents and youngsters may attend each site’s preschool orientation and open house to learn more. The orientation is set Aug. 24 and 3-year-olds will attend from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Four-year-olds in the all-day program will be divided into two sessions, with pupils whose last names begin with A-K attending from 11:40 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and those from L-Z attending from 1:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile the open house is set for Aug. 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Parents and guardians of preschool children who are enrolled will receive a letter with a schedule of all events. If you are not enrolled, please call so we can give you a schedule,” Smuck said. “At this time, we are still receiving applications and it will be full soon. This is why it is so important to complete a registration form as soon as possible.”

She explained changes were made to ensure preschoolers would be ready as they transitioned into elementary school.

For information, contact John Gregg Elementary at (740) 768-2100 or (740) 768-2366 or Stanton at (740) 282-5501 or visit the school offices weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Smuck is also available at the central office at (740) 282-0065, extension 1114.
