N. Cumberland a finalist in contest

NEW CUMBERLAND – The city is among the nominees for this year’s Turn This Town Around campaign, voting for which is open until Tuesday.

The campaign is held by West Virginia Focus magazine and the West Virginia Community Development Hub, with finalists announced earlier this week.

Communities in the contest are categorized by population – under 1,500 and between 1,500 and 6,000. Voting is being done online at wvfocus.com and will be open until midnight on Tuesday.

New Cumberland is a contestant in the under 1,500 category, which also includes the communities of Alderson, Davis, Hundred, Pineville, Sistersville and Whitesville.

Communities in the 1,500 to 6,000 category include Charles Town, Hinton, Logan, Petersburg, Philippi, Ripley and Weston.

The two winners will receive support to identify ways to improve their community and economy over the course of the following year, including training and hands-on assistance in planning and implementing projects to beautify and revitalize their downtowns, build new businesses and diversify their economies. They also will receive technical assistance through several agencies and organizations throughout West Virginia.

Sponsors of Turn This Town Around are West Virginia Focus magazine, the West Virginia Community Development Hub, West Virginia Public Broadcasting, the Benedum Foundation, BrickStreet Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, West Virginia Small Business Development Center, the West Virginia division of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Philanthropy WV and the Tamarack Foundation.
