Farmers’ markets continue with Family Night next week
With a variety of produce becoming available, the Brooke County Farmers’ Markets will continue next week, with the next stop in Bethany to coincide with a family night event.
Held in Wellsburg and Follansbee in recent years, the markets have been expanded to include stops at Ross Street, Bethany, on designated Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The next Bethany stop, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 28, will include the family night event at nearby Bethany Park. It will include a corn roast, home-made ice cream and various activities for the young and young at heart, such as a scavenger hunt and corn hole and lawn dice games.
Winners of the Kids Garden Club contest also will be recognized.
Earlier this year, the market’s board of directors, which includes vendors Ruth Brown, Britney Hervey Farris and Dale Brant, invited children in primary school to try planting their own gardens and post photos of their gardens on the group’s Facebook page.
Officials with Main Street Bank have agreed to provide $50 to each of three children whose gardens are most successful.
The Follansbee and Wellsburg markets continue on alternating Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The next Wellsburg market will be held today outside Unity Apartments on state Route 2.
The next Follansbee market Follansbee market will be held Wednesday at the Tractor Supply store on state Route 2.
The markets are open to vendors who live within a 50-mile radius of Brooke County’s borders. At least 70 percent of what they sell must be their own produce and the rest must be purchased within a 50-mile radius.
Vendors also may sell crafts, baked goods and jellies, jams and other canned produce, but all must be made by them.
