County fair set to begin on Aug. 11
SMITHFIELD – In just one week the Jefferson County Fairgrounds will be bustling with 4-H and FFA members and their livestock or still life projects, and fair board directors will be ironing out last-minute details.
The county fair gets under way Aug. 11 for junior fair members and continues through Aug. 17 at the fairgrounds at Friendship Park.
Added to the attractions this year is the battery operated car contest for children. This will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the grandstand. Details are not complete but in time will be found on the fair website at www.thejeffersoncountyfair.com.
Pedal pull tractors for those ages 4-11 will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 15. Registration is at 6 p.m.
An event that has held an attraction to 4-H and FFA members and those in the market for quality meat products is the junior fair livestock auction that starts at noon on Aug. 16. There will be a late afternoon recess for a complimentary meal for buyers and the event starts again with an auction of a Dave Barnhouse print at about 5:30 p.m., fair officials said.
Froehlich’s Catering will provide sit-down meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And there will be many food stands along the midway.
The crowning of Kathryn Whinnery of the Windy Ridge 4-H Club as the Ohio Fairs’ Queen is planned. She has attended more than 25 fairs throughout the state already during the fair season, but she said her greatest pleasure will be her last year of participating in Jefferson County 4-H and as the retiring 2013 fair queen.
Linda Daily, fair board secretary, said entries are plentiful for the livestock, domestic arts, culinary, arts, crafts and baking categories. Participant packets may be picked up from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday or Sunday. The auction of the baked and canned goods will be at 3 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The fair office phone number is (740) 733-8230.
