Weirton planning Saturday cleanup

WEIRTON A new community event will aim to clean up the city this Saturday.

Volunteers will meet at the Event Center for the Weirton Clean Up from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. will then pick up trash around town from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will receive a free dinner at the Event Center after the clean-up. All gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Organizations and businesses including the Weirton Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs, Shop N’ Save and the Boy Scouts are already involved through donations or volunteer efforts. Co-founder Marcus Weigel says they are hoping for a turnout of about 50 volunteers to help round up litter.

“We’ve been preparing for about a month, and we’re thinking we will definitely try to get another one together for next summer,” Weigel said.

Richard Lamp, the other co-founder, came up with the idea while making his daily drives to and from work on Greenbrier Road.

“I would just see tons of trash every day, and it got me thinking ‘This is pretty bad.’ Then I started to notice it on other city streets,” Lamp recalled. “So I got with my friend Marcus, and we organized this. I’d like to make it an annual thing, maybe even put together a committee.”

Lamp said his involvement will be limited after this year because he’ll be away at college most of the time. He said he hopes the event succeeds now and in the future.
