Events at First Presbyterian Church

July 7-11 – Vacation Bible School is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The theme is SonQuest Rainforest. Classes are pre-kindergarten to sixth grade and adult. All are welcome.

Monthly prayer walks begin 6 p.m. the third Thursday of every month meeting at the church.

The church is seeking a new piano player. See Luke Hightshue or Dave Meyer if interested.

TORONTO – An evening musical service is planned at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, county Road 28.

The free program has been providing assistance since 2002 at the Riverview United Methodist Church, 105 N. River Ave. Assistance is provided on the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The entrance to the church is handicap accessible.

Those age 65 or older and who have no prescription insurance are eligible for the program.

This is not a distribution center for medications, but a volunteer-based program that assists in filling out paperwork and sending in necessary applications to drug manufacturers. Once approved, clients begin receiving medications directly from companies in six to eight weeks.

May fire department report

The Toronto Fire Department had a total of eight calls for the month of May with an average turnout of nine members per call. The calls included three building fires; one dispatched and canceled enroute; one authorized controlled burn; one alarm sounded due to malfunction; one unintentional transmission of alarm; and one wind storm damage report.

Members of the fire department participated in the mock active shooter drill at the Toronto Junior/Senior High School. Department members also began hose testing during the month of May testing 219 sections totaling 10,950 feet. The department also had to have additional repairs made to the departments utility truck unit 7581.

Hydrant flushing in city

The city of Toronto Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants Monday through June 13. Water customers should expect a loss of pressure and water discoloration during the process. Refrain from washing laundry when flushing is taking place in the area. For information, call (740) 537-2591.

The schedule, barring any unforeseen problems, is Main South to Loretta Avenue and Main Street north to Freeman Avenue, Monday; Loretta Avenue south to Trenton Street and Freeman Avenue north to Myers Street, Tuesday; Trenton Street south to Federal Street and Myers Street north to Stewart Street, Wednesday; Federal Street south to Dennis Way and Stewart Street north to Spring Street, Thursday; and Dennis Way south to Fernwood Drive, June 13.

Focus in Toronto plans open meeting

The Focus in Toronto organization will host an open meeting at noon Sunday in the Roosevelt Recreation Center to discuss the upcoming 14th-annual Gem City Day, scheduled from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 5.
