Murder suspects in court Friday

CADIZ – The two individuals accused in the murder of Joseph M. Strother, a 45-year-old Cadiz man found dead at Sally Buffalo Park on March 28, will be returned to Harrison County late today.

Eve Kelley, 33, previously of Wintersville, and Matthew Dowdel, 24, of Hopedale have been held without bail in the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., as fugitives from justice.

Officials from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department left Tuesday to pick up the suspects and bring them back via police cruiser. It previously seemed as though Dowdel and Kelley might remain in Florida for weeks due to their charges, including grand theft of a motor vehicle under $100,000 and resisting an officer without violence. Dowdel also faced a charge of driving with a suspended license. However, Florida officials decided to drop the charges to allow Harrison County officials to return them to where their alleged initial crime took place.

Dowdel and Kelley are slated to be in court at 2 p.m. Friday. They each face four charges: Murder, felonious assault, complicity to commit murder and complicity to commit felonious assault.

In related news, a Daytona Beach Shores newspaper reported that a bystander took part in the chase to catch Dowdel and Kelley. After a police officer pulled the duo over in a Walgreen’s parking lot, they jumped out of their stolen Chevy Trailblazer and took off on foot. The bystander, identified by officials as Robert Kenaiou, can be seen on the dashboard camera’s video jumping out of his own vehicle and giving chase along with the police officer. Though Kenaiou, a bail bondsman from Cocoa, Fla., lost his sandal in the chase, he pursued until more police units arrived to assist.
